Chapter 15

This time, when I went to the club, I showed up in my usual clothes. That included the new shoes I had bought—a pair of sneakers that were still too shiny for my liking, and hadn’t been broken in enough to stop rubbing at my feet in all the wrong places. But at least I could run in them.

When the bouncer looked me over with a sneer, I met it with one of my own. “I have business inside,” I told him before he could say a word. “You can let me in, or you can find out why this place should have hired me instead of you.” Tonight, I wasn’t trying to keep from being noticed, and I didn’t care if I made a scene.

The bouncer opened his mouth to argue, but something in my eyes made him close it again without saying a word. He stepped aside and waved me through.

“And what makes you think you’re in a position to demand anything from me?”

“You didn’t let me finish. I need you to tell me everything you know about Lucifer.”

Her demeanor changed in an instant. One minute she was eyeing me like an alpha dog faced with a mewling puppy who needed to be taught its place. The next, she was cringing back, every line of her body tight with terror. Her eyes darted back and forth as if she thought he might be here with me even now, lying in wait behind the green fog.

“That got your attention? Good. Let’s go someplace more private and talk. And bring your friends. I want to hear what all of you have to say.”

She took me into a private room that looked like it had once been used for playing cards, probably in the club’s previous incarnation. Now the poker table stood gathering dust, with chips scattered across the floor. A stack of cardboard boxes lined the wall to one side, all overflowing with a wide assortment of items that made me guess that whoever had owned this place before, they had packed up in a hurry. Packed up and then not taken any of their things with them. I could hazard a guess as to
